Dolphins have been finding unique ways to catch their prey for thousands of years. For example, when the red drum fish is searching for food near the beach, the dolphin creates a wave with a powerful surge that washes both the fish and the dolphin onto the sand. The dolphin quickly snaps up the flopping fish with its beak. Then it uses its powerful tail to push its way back into the ocean for another catch. Bottlenose dolphins have incredible hunting skills, allowing them to choose from a menu of over thirty-five different marine species whenever they feel hungry. "Luckily, if one prey animal migrates away for the winter, dolphins adjust their hunting strategy to feed on something different," marine biologist Lauren Rust explains. "They're very adaptable and very smart." Swimming in four out of six oceans and off the coast of six different continents, this intelligent species has been putting its marvelous hunting abilities to good use for hundreds of years. They will continue to do so for generations to come. Although dolphins are known for their hunting skills, they are even more well known for their gregarious attitudes. It is not uncommon to see a pod of dolphins swimming alongside your boat. They are very gentle creatures who live their lives ecstatically swimming through the oceans, finding new adventures every day.
