As old as the mountains and plains it happens on, hiking is both an ancient and modern activity that many people enjoy. While sounding basic and crude, hiking is an enjoyable activity that everyone can enjoy, no matter their age, location, or fitness level. All around the world are mountain ranges and hiking trails, ranging from the Appalachians on America's east coast to the Rockies in the west. Millions of people enjoy hiking every year and can find health benefits in addition to the picturesque vistas it offers. Hiking can improve both muscular and cardiovascular health and rests at an easily attainable level, instead of forcing people to train for years for physical improvement. Hiking also offers other bonuses such as increased bone density, improved balance, and more restful sleep. The equipment needed for hiking is also simple and can be fairly cheap to begin with. The most important part of hiking gear is a solid pair of hiking boots that will protect your ankles from rolling on rocks and will keep your feet warm and dry. It is also important to wear appropriate clothes for the weather, depending on whether sun, rain, or snow is expected during your excursion. While optional, some hikers opt for using hiking poles for increased stability. Depending on the duration of your trek, you will also need to bring a backpack, a tent, and a sleeping bag. Hiking bags come in two different variations: internal and external frame. The difference is that internal frame backpacks are fairly pliable and less rigid than an external frame backpack, which typically includes a metal frame around the pack that allows for sturdiness and the ability to more easily attach items to the outside of the pack. Each person's hiking equipment choice is individualized and allows for tailoring your gear to your own abilities. For example, some may choose to camp with a hammock instead of a tent, while still others choose to hike alone instead of with a group of friends. To begin your journey, simply research hiking trails near you to find the plethora of hidden opportunities that you never knew existed. Now it's time for you to hike to the summit!
